"When death is inevitable, hospice seeks neither to hasten or postpone it."
Of the many services Serenity Hospice provides, volunteer care companions (in home and in nursing home), clerical services, and fundraising from "volunteer angels" is a part of that program.
Using our "special talents", bringing caring and love to ease the pain and loneliness of our patients, reading, talking, playing cards, sharing their life stories with them and sometimes just holding their hand.
We give volunteers up to 30 hours of orientation before they are assigned to a patient. Classes are held for groups or individually, in some circumstances.
The orientation covers the following topics:
Session I - Introduction to hospice
Session II - Concepts of death, dying, and grief
Session III - Communication skills
Session IV - Care & comfort measures
Session V - Understanding diseases and conditions
Session VI - Psychosocial and spiritual dynamics of death and dying
Session VII - The hospice family/family dynamics
Session VIII - Managing personal stress
Session IX - Understanding the bereavement process
Session X - Duties, responsibilities and opportunities for the hospice volunteer
If you are interested in being a volunteer, please call us at 1-800-616-1201 or 765-884-7000 for more information.
Thelma L. Benner, volunteer coordinator.
